Convert decimal hours to hours and minutes
- Keep the whole-number hours. For 6.75 hours, keep 6.
- Multiply the decimal portion by 60.
.75 × 60 = 45, giving 6 hours 45 minutes.

Decimal conversion is not time-clock rounding
These are different operations.
Conversion expresses the same duration in another notation. Thirty minutes converts exactly to 0.5 hours.
Rounding changes a value according to a chosen rule. For example, changing a punch from 8:07 to 8:00 is not a decimal conversion.
Keeping those concepts separate matters in payroll. This calculator converts values; it should not silently alter the source time.
Decimal hours for payroll
Decimal hours are convenient because they can be multiplied directly by an hourly rate.
If a worker has 7.5 hours at $22/hour: 7.5 × 22 = $165
But determining compensable time, overtime, rounding rules, and the correct pay rate can involve policies or legal requirements beyond the conversion itself.

Which precision should I use?
Some minute values terminate neatly in decimal form; others repeat.
- 15 minutes = .25 exactly
- 30 minutes = .5 exactly
- 45 minutes = .75 exactly
- 20 minutes = .333333… repeating
- 10 minutes = .166666… repeating
For calculations, preserve sufficient precision and round at the stage required by the destination system or applicable policy. Repeatedly rounding intermediate values can introduce avoidable error.
